Arup Associates won a 2002 competition for a new bus station commissioned by Transport for London. Completed in 2005, the interchange takes the form of a canopy, three “ribbons” of steel, which sweep down to provide shelter for seating areas. The outside elements rise to 6.5m above street level, allowing wind to flush outside air over the top of double-decker buses. It ends in a dramatic cantilever at an angle of 20 degrees, supporting a 200m2 installation of photovoltaic panels. In an early example of urban informatics, the current and accumulated output of the PV system is displayed on a screen at street level, to put energy savings in context for the public.
